MUSIC

"Rhythm is the soul of life. The whole universe revolves in rhythm. Every thing and every human action revolves in rhythm." ~Babatunde Olatunji

The world is made up of different rhythms. It exists in vibrating atoms, our bodies, our hearts, and our breath. The first sound we ever hear is our mother’s heartbeat and her breathing. It is no surprise, then, that the rhythms in music can affect us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Drums have a particularly strong affect on us as they mimic our heartbeats, therefore, the pounding sound of a drum can help us to take notice of our own heartbeat. It is our heartbeats that keep us alive and vital. Drumming can also be very therapeutic in getting in touch with our inner selves. A low, steady beat can create calmness whereas a stronger upbeat can stir us into action or frenzy.

Current research is verifying the therapeutic benefits of drumming which Shamans and healers from Mongolia to Africa have long known. Recent research indicates that drumming accelerates physical healing, boosts the immune system and produces feelings of well-being, a release of emotional trauma, and reintegration of self. Drumming induces deep relaxation, promotes the production of endorphins and endogenous opiates, the bodies own morphine-like painkillers and increases cancer killing cells.

Probably the most phenomenal effect of drumming and/or rhythms/music in general, is its effect on the brain. Research has demonstrated

that the physical transmission of rhythmic energy to the brain synchronizes the left and right sides of the brain. When the left side (responsible for logic) and the right side ( responsible for intuition) begin to pulsate in harmony, the inner guidance of intuitive knowing can then flow unimpeded into conscious awareness. The origin of the word rhythm is Greek meaning “to flow.”

Rhythmic drumming also induces altered states, which have a wide range of therapeutic applications. The brain changes from Beta waves (focused concentration and activity) to Alpha waves (calm and relaxed), producing feelings of euphoria and well-being. Alpha activity is associated with meditation, shamanic trance, and integrative modes of consciousness.

Drumming circles have the added effect of providing a sense of connectedness with others. It is a form of self expression which allows you to connect to yourself on a deeper level and with other like minded people. Creating rhythms with others is creating harmony amongst fellow humans and creating life…because “the whole universe revolves in rhythm.”

The effects of drumming illuminate the significance of spiritual factors in healing. The mind, body, and spirit can all be accessed through drumming or introducing any rhythms, vibrations or tones to them. These rhythms or vibrations can create harmony within the mind, body, and spirit as well as among other humans when created together. This is just a small example of the power of music, rhythms, vibrations and tones on the human existence. If we use the proper focus, intention and attention when listening to or playing music, we can improve our health, our outlook, and our relationships.
