INNER WORK
Continued from page 17
Similarly , mathematics and the sine wave provide another model to reimagine our relationship with inner work , reminding us our high points will be matched by equal lows , i . e ., the height of our joy will be equal to the depth of our sorrow . If we use the linear Western mind , which expects only positive progress , we can become discouraged when we hit a low . Reorienting our relationship to that ebb and flow as a natural life rhythm helps to maintain our stamina and motivation .

Another shift to help us override barriers involves accepting emotions and pain as a guidance system , which alerts us to a need for change internally in our thoughts or externally in our environment . Just as physical pain tells us what needs attention or healing , so does emotional pain . By learning and practicing tools that help us to recognize emotional discomfort as a call for attention , we can build stamina to feel , alchemize , and direct energy / emotion towards healing .
