4 1 Thanks to a partnership with Scholastic, the GISD Summer Reading Program provided approximately 9,700 free books to every student in early childhood programs, Pre-K, kindergarten and first grade. The books were distributed in three languages: English, Spanish and Vietnamese, in hopes of helping students develop strong literacy skills and a love of reading. 4 6 Garland ISD’s staff of achievers continues to shine by gaining local, regional and national honors. Superintendent Ricardo López led the way by winning the Spirit of Sachse Award, while Trina Cunningham snagged the Computer Science Association of Dallas’ Educator of the Year title. Additionally, Francis Luna received the 2019 Excellence in Nursing Award from D Magazine, and Anna Smith was named a Rising Star by Food Service Director Magazine. Congratulations to GISD’s 2019 Dell Scholars: Adriana Martin Del Campo, Zeidy Flores, Tony Huynh, Melissa Jimenez, Ty Lankford, Everett Monsivais, Cierra Potts, Marlen Rodriguez, Paola Sanchez-Quintero and Denise Tovar. These seniors joined an elite group of college-bound students who will each receive $20,000, a laptop and ongoing educational support. THE TOP 9 Students at the Gilbreath-Reed Career and Technical Center were challenged to customize two standard Harley-Davidson models for the Battle of the Kings 2019 build competition. The students were the only high school team competing against more than 200 dealers from around the world. connected
