Sixty-four campuses earned Energy Star recertification in 2017-18, making GISD the largest district in Texas to achieve the award for three years in a row.

Vejjajiva for claiming the highest honor awarded by the Texas Art Education Association, a Gold Seal, at the state Visual Arts Scholastic Event. Both are now being featured in a traveling exhibit along with just 150 other students statewide.

Committed to helping families # ReadMoreTogether, GISD gifted over 10,000 books to students in prekindergarten-first grade at the beginning of summer break. The district also hosted workshops throughout the break to teach parents how to read with their children, and the Reading with Rodney mobile library made more than 80 stops around the district this summer.

Two Garland ISD schools are among the top in Texas according to a report released by the nonprofit Children at Risk. Out of more than 4,500 elementaries, Hillside and Kimberlin Academies for
Excellence ranked No. 4 and No. 6 in North Texas and No. 12 and No. 16 in the state, respectively.
