GISD now open to all cities
For more than 100 years , the Garland Independent School District has been serving children of the cities of Garland , Rowlett and Sachse to ensure that all students graduate prepared for college , careers and life . Graduates of GISD have become actors , chief executive officers , decorated armed service members , engineers , lawyers and professional athletes . On May 3 , 2021 , GISD opened its doors to allow students who live outside our district boundaries to attend our outstanding schools .
From full-day Pre-K to award-winning programs to state-of-the-art career tech classrooms , students from across the Metroplex will be able to experience Garland ISD ' s greatness . The district ' s Open Enrollment program is accepting applications for all students in North Texas . Children who do not live inside our attendance zone now have the opportunity to experience our award-winning education .
" Since we have open seats , why not fill them with people who are going to meet our criteria ? It ' s not going to be just anybody who wants to come in ," said Superintendent Dr . Ricardo López . " We border so many other districts that sometimes our schools are closer than their campuses . In fact , they might be at a closer distance but not in our GISD boundaries . Now they can come to our schools ."
The district ' s Open Enrollment program is tuition-free . To apply , students must meet eligibility criteria and complete an online application during appropriate submission windows . Campus and seat selections are limited . It is important to note that the GISD Board of Trustees reserves the right to discontinue the Open Enrollment program at the end of any school year .

The Open Enrollment program does not affect resident students who attend district schools . Garland ISD residents will always have program and school placement priority . Only remaining seats on specific campuses will be offered to Open Enrollment applicants . Garland ISD monitors class sizes to ensure they do not exceed certain limits . Open Enrollment students cannot be placed ahead of resident students who apply for district programs or schools .
