A Little Help from Tech Tools
What if your next doctor ’ s office visit happened over the computer , and your physician automatically had access to your vital signs based on an app you ’ ve been using ? With advances in technology , the typical physician ’ s office visit is being radically transformed .
The long-awaited transition to tech tools that enable physicians to communicate with patients remotely has arrived . Telemedicine breaks down a barrierto-access for healthcare and alters care delivery . Similarly , wearable tech allows care providers to monitor vital signs based on a patient ’ s activity over time .
Apply the same concepts to your business : 1 . Think outside the office . The healthcare industry feels the strain of a new group of previously uninsured patients coming into the system . Employing video conference technology provides greater access to care and allows physicians to connect with more patients and streamline their office workflow . Consider new pathways for engaging employees and customers with technology .
2 . Use tech to build relationships . Portable applications can empower employees to pursue more meaningful relationships among team members or with customers . With immediate details and information at their fingertips , the sales force could be positioned to make more accurate assessments and more meaningful connections , much like physicians who have real patient data that extends beyond office visits . This allows people to be on the same page and share viewpoints , which leads to a greater connection and relationship .

Consumers and patients prefer personalization of services — avoiding the need to reintroduce a topic or concern each visit . Personalization can be as simple as sending automated appointment reminders , creating bundled appointments , and offering preferred appointment windows to patients or customers .
Bringing Business Concepts to Life
Businesses in the Hudson Valley and surrounding areas have access to 3D printing thanks to a growing initiative at SUNY New Paltz .
3D printing has served businesses for more than two decades . But with advances in small-scale technology , individuals , businesses , and educational institutions can tap into a world of potential at these innovation hubs . The Hudson Valley Advanced Manufacturing Center ( HVAMC ) does just that . Started in 2014 , the center — an initiative with the Hudson Valley Economic Development Center ’ s HV3D — brings affordable 3D printing to life .
Everyone Benefits The partnership goes both ways — businesses benefit from having access to 3D printing technology , and students get hands-on experience consulting with clients , designing with CAD , and developing prototypes for businesses . The center has helped many businesses bring products to life , from custom bouquet holders to motorcycle grips and rotor blade clamps for helicopters . “ So many clients are interested in what we do and come to us with potential applications ,” says Daniel Freedman , Dean of the School of Science and Engineering and Director of HVAMC . “ It ’ s rare we don ’ t find an application that ’ s relevant to a business . With 3D printing , there are few limitations to what we can do . That ’ s what we do as an academic center — we ’ re helping businesses find ways to create value around the technology we have here on campus .”
