On April 29, CI successfully held the 2012 Teachers Workshop at NC State. The workshop provided opportunities for local Chinese teachers to share their teaching experience and discuss their roles in TCFL( Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language). Teachers expressed great passion for this training program; some even drove for 3 hours to attend this workshop. Altogether there were over 30 NC Chinese teachers from different areas who participated in the workshop.
In the morning, Dr. Ding Jianning, Deputy Director of NC Confucius Institute, welcomed attendees and briefly introduced the flow of the CI training program. Next, senior Chinese teacher Wang Lirong from Cannon School, Concord, gave a speech on Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction, discussing and demonstrating several applications and how teachers used these applications to effectively teach the Chinese language. Ms. Joanne Shang from Durham Academy also shared several fun and engaging classroom activities to help transform learning to actual experience in Chinese classrooms.
The afternoon sessions started with Ms. Alison Winzeler, NC Teach Director. Ms. Alison was invited to give a brief introduction to the Chinese Licensure Program at NC State. This program is for Chinese teachers who have noneducation degrees and would like to earn their teaching license. Upon completing the licensure program, those nondegree part-time Chinese teachers can become full-time professional Chinese teachers at NC public schools, benefiting both teachers and schools. Finally, Enloe High School’ s Chinese teacher Mr. Cheng Qiang talked about many practical and effective skills on classroom management.
The training workshop was highly praised by all the teachers present. Many teachers said that they benefited a lot from this workshop, and would actively support and take part in CI’ s activities in the future. Confucius Institute at NC holds similar activities annually to improve the quality of NC Chinese teachers, as well as to promote Chinese language and culture in North Carolina.
