CONFERENCE SCHEDULE | 26
Shining a light on the ambiguities of Social Justice Tracks : College / University , High School , PreK-8 Presenters : Carole Miller & Juliana Saxton Location : Crowne Plaza – San Juan – Fifth Floor
Current teaching practice is expected to embrace equality of access , equity that is fair and flexible , and depth in experience and intellectual challenge . Its purpose is to develop citizens able to function as participants in , contributors to , and shapers of a democratic society to have , in other words , the critical capacity to be a reader and writer of the world . At a time when creativity , innovation , and much of economic health is dependent upon our ability to communicate , schools are increasingly seen as " laboratories for democratic life " ( Bloem , Klooster & Preece , 2008 , p . 6 ), requiring each student to bring their own personal contexts and feelings into play . These become the material with which the metaphorical worlds are woven . As facilitators , we have found that experiential , embodied explorations of text and illustrations can generate actualized empathic responses . The students see the story right from the inside , with all of its contradictions , questions , and challenges , negotiating the ugliness of the content with a sensitivity and understanding that is surprising , considering teenagers ' reputation for disengagement . In Tricycle , although the storytelling is direct and the words easily comprehended , the text itself is often ambiguous and metaphorical ; these same qualities are reflected in the enchanting illustrations . From an adult point of view , we glimpse the political instability and class consciousness that is an inherent theme of the text . The story illuminates the universals of rich and poor , haves and have-nots , and the opportunities afforded those for whom money is not an issue . Drama and theatre , by engaging us in fictional lives , enable us to walk in other people ' s shoes , creating the distance from self that makes it possible for us to see our existential relationship with the world .
Story & Process Dramas : Building an SEL Focused and Culturally Responsive Classrooms Tracks : Early Childhood , High School , PreK-8 , Youth Theatre Presenters : Martin Rodriguez & Mateo Hernandez Location : Crowne Plaza – McKinley – Third Floor
Culturally Responsive Pedagogy and Social Emotional Learning have continued to become necessary aspects of the field of education and educational theatre . In this session , attendees will participate in short pieces of process and story dramas that focus on CRP and SEL . The lessons and stories used will create frameworks and bases for educators to build lessons . Attendees will also brainstorm ideas for their own educational settings for using the process and story drama methods , incorporating CRP and SEL into their lessons , and various stories we can use within these techniques and methodologies .
