With effectiveness and efficiency , this method complements all performance training practices . Using individual storytelling narratives from myths and legends for each archetype - Benevolent Leader , Warrior , Mother , Maiden , Crone , and more . We will explore several archetypes and apply them to text . A powerful tool for the actor , singer and theater teacher .
Conjunction Junction - Where Theater and Social Emotional Learning Meet Track : Youth Theatre Presenter : Anthony Pound Location : Crowne Plaza – Parkside – Second Floor
For theater teachers at all grade levels , we often find ourselves stuck at the crossroads of intent and impact . The lesson we planned is not exactly what the students need on that day , at that moment and we are faced with the question of sticking to our plan or flying by the seat of our pants . In this workshop , using the CASEL framework for Social Emotional Learning and the pedagogy of Viola Spolin , we will explore how theater educators can plan and adapt to the needs of any classroom . As a group we will participate in traditional theater games that most educators have known and used for years , exploring which Social Emotional Learning Competencies each game is closely aligned with . We will then dive deeper to see how , with a few modifications in game facilitation , most activities can shift their focus to another Competency in the CASEL framework . Using methods developed by the Teaching Artists and Program Staff of Junior Players in Dallas , TX , we hope to fill the tool box of theater teachers with the tools to connect hard and soft skills to serve the whole student and help them make an impact with their peers .
Engaging Students in Dramaturgy : Illuminating the " Why Here Why Now " Track : High School Presenters : Abra Chusid & Joey Fitzpatrick Location : ACT Contemporary Theatre – Lower Falls Lobby
Adlai E . Stevenson High School outside Chicago has a robust dramaturgy program . For each of the 6 plays in our main stage season , we ask students and audiences to consider the play ' s relevancy by interrogating the " Why here ? Why now ?" Over the past 6 years , dramaturgy has transformed from a teacher-led initiative to an entirely student-led process - this year alone we had 14 different student dramaturgs , including senior mentor dramaturgs . In this session , attendees will engage in activities and discussions to learn new and exciting ways to empower student dramaturgs in order to create more illuminating theatrical experiences for everyone involved in the production . These projects include glossaries , artist packets , documentaries , cast & crew bonding experiences , interactive audience displays , and program notes . Examples include materials from recent productions including " Disney ' s Newsies ," " Disney ' s Beauty and the Beast ," " The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time ," " She Kills Monsters ," and " Almost , Maine ."
