Honoring Diversity , Equity and Inclusion in the Prison Classroom Track : Applied Theatre Presenter : Nancy Smithner & Vincent Mraz Location : Crowne Plaza – Parkside – Second Floor
This applied theatre session will address the use of Diversity , Equity , and Inclusion ( DEI ) practices in a prison theatre classroom , with the goal of illuminating the enormous need for meaningful exchange , nonhierarchical teaching methods , and creative possibilities . Applied theatre implies intervention , communication , development , and the ability to propose alternatives in nontraditional settings . This interactive panel discussion will reflect upon my work as an applied theatre practitioner , teaching acting at Sing Sing Maximum Security Correctional Facility in the Spring of 2022 , in collaboration with my teaching assistant , Renee Troxler . For three years , due to Covid restrictions , our incarcerated students were unable to have workshops , during which time the world turned upside down . Throughout this period , we , as teaching artists with the organization Rehabilitation Through the Arts , engaged in many Diversity , Equity , and Inclusion training , as it had become essential to examine , revise and reinvent our practices to specifically incorporate these principles behind the walls . In our interactive AATE session , we will share our work incorporating ethical practices into the teaching of acting ; model teaching techniques that aim to honor the identity and culture of each student ; and center our discussion around the use of non-hierarchical pedagogical tools such as collaboration , inclusivity , and dialogical exchange . While engaging in the aesthetic skills of the art form of acting , a community can be created as incarcerated students support each other through embodied learning , improvisation , feedback , and critical thinking . We will reflect on how creativity can thrive in the most punitive of environments , and how community and ensemble can be built inside the prison theatre classroom . We will discuss the challenges and revelations of using theatre-making to enhance expressive competencies and cultivate resilience , increase self-esteem , and heighten empathetic awareness for all involved .
