SESSION BLOCK 4 Friday , 2:45pm-4pm
After experimenting with " light touch " immersive theater in 2021 , our program took another big step into the world of immersive theater . The result was THE HAUNTED , a ghost story where the audience is in the center of the action . This workshop will take you through the structures and methodology we used to devise and write the production . We ' ll explore the development process , starting with the basic idea which transformed and grew into a series of original , immersive one-on-one performances offering our audience a deeply personal theater experience . Workshop participants will walk away with a structure and philosophy that will help you bring immersive theater to your programs . We ' ll talk about the triumphs and challenges , big picture concerns as well as nuts and bolts details , and what makes this work so exciting to create with student-actors .
Dichotomies and Dynamics : Creating Narrative-Driven Non-Verbal Two-Character TVY Track : Early Childhood Presenters : Joshua Rashon Streeter & Michelle Kozlak Location : Crowne Plaza – Yosemite – Third Floor
Drawing upon Arts on Horizon ' s two-person Theatre for the Very Young ( TVY ) model and Emerson College ' s graduate New Works Laboratory class , this session will explore how to create original Theatre for the Very Young ( TVY ) for ages 3-5 and family audiences . Together we will explore the following questions : How can I develop characters and narratives for TVY ? What devising tools support the exploration of movement and physical theatre in TVY ? How can a new work development process be built into an artistic company or university program ? This session will be led by theatre-maker / theatre educator ( Streeter ) and Arts on the Horizon Artistic Director and Founder ( Kozlak ) who collaborated on Birds of a Feather , a new physical theatre non-verbal play commissioned through Arts on the Horizon ' s New Play Initiative . Through the session , we will learn about the characteristics and elements that an artistic director seeks in a new piece for the very young . Additionally , we will center on the tools of storytelling , physical devising , and design to understand how to move ideas into moments for a new TVY piece . Using Birds of a Feather as a launching point , we will discuss how gender dynamics and stereotypes can be pushed back against through casting ; focus on a collaborative process with agency and shared power between an artistic director , director , playwright , and actors / musicians ; and emphasize the role of play to explore new ideas in the rehearsal room . The workshop will utilize a devising process to highlight the essential characteristics of two-person , narrative-driven TVY , which Kozlak and Streeter built to support emerging artists interested in learning about the form . Therefore , this workshop will employ hands-on , creative activities to discuss , devise , share , and reflect !
