CONFERENCE SCHEDULE | 11
SESSION BLOCK 2 Friday , 9am-10:15am
What do we mean when we say we center students in our practice ? How are we consciously or unconsciously reinforcing bias , retaining regressive and restrictive practices , holding on to power , and allowing the machine of education to determine our actions ? This workshop interrogates typical high school theatre practices and offers radical re-imaginings for secondary Theatre . It offers concrete practices that educators can enact in their own classrooms .
Foundations of Contracts for Theatre and Education Tracks : Applied Theatre , College / University , Professional Theatre , Youth Theatre Presenter : Aimee Reid Location : Crowne Plaza – Glacier / Sequoia – Lobby Level
Theatre and education professionals receive intensive and thorough training in theatre practice , theory , and history . We learn about pedagogy , curriculum , and classroom management . We train in social justice practice and accessibility . But so many of us work for ourselves as freelancers , or jump into theatre management with little or no training . As a result , we hear horror story after horror story of bad experiences , many of which could be avoided if theatre and education practitioners had more experience in contracts and memorandums of understanding ( MOUs ). While the presenters in this session are not lawyers , they will share foundational practices and invite other attendees to share their experiences so that everyone in the room feels more equipped to enter employment and partnerships with more clarity and a firmer understanding of rights and responsibilities .
Illuminating Coaching and Questioning : Building Critical Consciousness in Arts Partnerships Tracks : High School , PreK-8 , Professional Theatre Presenters : Joshua Rashon Streeter & Meghan Schenker-Fulcher Location : Crowne Plaza – San Juan – Fifth Floor
How can social justice practice be embedded into artistic collaborations between classroom teachers and teaching artists ? Drawing upon Hammond ' s ( 2020 ) revised Distinction of Equity chart and Mohamad ' s ( 2020 ) Equity Framework , and connecting to Dawson & Kelin ' s ( 2014 ) core practices of teaching artistry , this session will explore how to raise critical consciousness through collaborations that utilize intentional coaching strategies ( Agular , 2013 ; Agular , 2020 ). The coaching lens framework allows participants to dig deeper into the root cause of complex systems and lean into difficult conversations . These lenses help gain a comprehensive and thorough understanding of a situation to determine effective actions to change or improve collaboration . With a hyper-focus on equity , diversity , and inclusion in our schools and theatre companies post-2020 , coaching strategies to support reciprocal and critical dialogues support educators and artists working in institutional systems amid cancel culture , lack of action out of fear of repercussion , and more questions than answers . This session will be led by an instructional coach ( Schenker-Fulcher ) and professional development facilitator ( Streeter ) who , together , develop and deliver professional development to K-16 educators and teaching artists . The interactive session will explore the following questions : How can coaching and questioning support the development of direct , constructive , and reciprocal conversations during the beginning , middle , and end of a collaboration ? How can praxis support educators and teaching artists to prompt , promote , and sustain critical consciousness throughout their partnership ? How are power , privilege , and authority at play in a collaboration ; what is the impact on collaboration ? This workshop will use a modified process drama to
