the company . Participants will share how healing centered practices show up across their artistic , education , and administrative practices , as well as create a vision for including community voices in these practices .
Integrating Mindfulness Activities into the Performing Arts Elementary Classroom Track : PreK-8 Presenter : Amanda Exley Lower Location : Alpine 1 ( Lucerne Level ) – Swissotel Chicago
In the modern classroom and in recent years , supporting social emotional health and well-being of our students has come to the forefront of our teaching practices . I intend to lead teachers through several examples of ways to include mindfulness in the Performing Arts classroom . Participants will walk through important touchpoints of my practice in order to leave with resources to further support their own students . I will introduce exercises that incorporate breathing , body movement , sound , self-expression , self-awareness , and reflective practice . Exercises will range in scaffolded difficulty to best fit various parts of the lesson ( warm up , technique , application , exit ticket ). Supporting mindfulness in the arts classrooms is important because it reminds students that the artistic classroom can be therapeutic and a safe space to feel emotions , re-center your body , and leave with a greater sense of self . My presentation and work affirms the power of mindfulness specifically for the growth of an elementary aged arts student .
Re-Writing the Declaration Tracks : Applied Theatre , College / University , High School , Research / Scholarship , Youth Theatre Presenter : Quenna Lene Barrett Location : Lucerne 3 ( Lucerne Level ) – Swissotel Chicago
How can a place truly ever be free to all ? How can we resist oppressing another in a quest for freedom and independence ? How can people not included in this nation ’ s founding ( re ) claim this is a space where we belong ? Catalyzed by the movement for Black Lives , Re-Writing the Declaration is a participatory play that seeks to leverage the multicultural value of theater to affirm , recognize , and celebrate the lives that are too often systemically devalued by this country . Using the play ' s process as a " case study ," participants in this workshop will combine theater and other art modalities to creatively and collectively : investigate the Declaration of Independence , develop proposals for alternate manifestos for governance , and commit to actions of justice .
