This discussion will focus on Cycle 1 and Cycle 2 of my action research project , The Critical Thinking Within Creative Drama . The research questions are : How do educators support the development of their students ' critical thinking skills via creative drama and theater ? What do teachers perceive as the obstacles preventing students from critically thinking ?

Many theatre educators wear the unofficial hat of “ counselor ”, yet most are not trained in counseling much less licensed as mental health counselors . More and more our students are dealing with trauma in their daily lives we know nothing about . Additionally , theatre teachers and students are working with scripts that deal with similar events to their own lives . This sensitive material could be triggering for students processing trauma . This workshop is designed to provide theatre teachers with tools and techniques from the theatre world and the counseling world to use in rehearsals and classes to help all students when working with traumatic material on stage .

This session will be a guided discussion on creating healing centered engagement ( formerly trauma informed care ) practices in youth-centered spaces across a TYA company , based on the work of Children ’ s Theater of Madison ( CTM ). By pairing best practices from psychologists at our local public schools to engaging our artistic , education , and production staff ( as well as the board ), we will introduce our community based journey to establish common language and goals , gain stakeholder feedback , and implement our practices throughout
