Happy Days: Baird Center expansion helping to raise the Milwaukee meetings proposition
M ilwaukee entered a new
chapter in its evolution as a meetings destination following the opening of the expanded Baird Center in 2024. The $ 456m redevelopment doubled the centre’ s footprint to 1.3m sq. ft, creating a multi-building complex that gives the city the scale and flexibility to compete for larger association meetings, exhibitions and corporate events.
More than simply increasing capacity, the project has repositioned Milwaukee within the North American meetings landscape. The expanded venue can now host multiple, overlapping events simultaneously, supported by 300,000 sq. ft of contiguous exhibition space, 52 state-of-the-art breakout rooms and the rooftop Baird Ballroom overlooking Downtown.
“ Milwaukee is in a new phase of growth,” says Visit Milwaukee’ s vice-president of communications and advocacy, Claire Koenig, adding that the Baird Center’ s booking pipeline shows increased confidence in the city and its flagship venue.
Accessibility has also been a key consideration at the venue, with features including quiet rooms, Mamava nursing pods, sensory rooms and KultureCity certification designed to create a more inclusive delegate experience.
Sustainability has been woven throughout the redevelopment, from rooftop solar panels and a water retention system to bird-friendly fritted glass. The venue has also achieved LEED Gold certification.
“ Today’ s event organisers aren’ t just interested in square footage.
Sustainability, accessibility and inclusivity are now top of mind … and we’ re committed to creating meetings that are welcoming, responsible and designed with the future in mind,” Koenig adds.
Among the standout wins in the pipeline is the American Society of Association Executives( ASAE) Annual Meeting & Exposition, scheduled for 2034, alongside a growing portfolio of medical, scientific and specialist association events. The expanded Baird Center is projected to generate billions of dollars in economic impact for Wisconsin over the coming decades.
“ We now have the convention infrastructure to compete for a much broader range of national and international meetings and have radically changed perceptions of what Milwaukee can deliver,” says Koenig.
Beyond Baird Center Milwaukee’ s compact Downtown means delegates can move easily between hotels, restaurants, waterfront attractions and the convention centres without relying on lengthy coach transfers.
The city also offers a mix of leisure experiences including the Milwaukee RiverWalk, Historic Third Ward and Lakefront, while attractions such as the Milwaukee Art Museum and Harley-Davidson Museum are popular. Milwaukee ' s brewing heritage remains a draw, complemented by a thriving independent food scene.
“ Our goal is to position Milwaukee as a destination that can confidently host events on an international stage while holding on to the authenticity that sets us apart,” say Koenig.
Building momentum The enhanced facilities have broadened the range of events Milwaukee can attract. Events including Microscopy & Microanalysis, USA Fencing, USA Wrestling’ s largest national event and AdeptiCon have all chosen Milwaukee as their host city. The annual CheeseExpo convention also took full advantage of the Baird Center’ s expansion, utilising its expansive exhibition space to welcome thousands of dairy professionals from around the globe.
Looking ahead, TEAMS Conference & Expo, the world’ s largest gathering of sports-event organisers, will bring its annual event to Milwaukee in 2027.
Milwaukee is no longer simply a regional meetings destination, but one with the facilities, accessibility and visitor experience to compete on a much bigger stage. n
