center aims to be a central gathering spot,
providing space for sports and recreation.
The Aquatics Center and Commons with
an Olympic-sized pool and stadium seat-
ing opened May 25. Open space with
public art will provide a place for people
to come together.
The center will provide many other
amenities: a library, children’s museum,
veterans hall with seating for 500 and
an expanded senior center. “We’ve out-
grown the space we are in,” says Patri-
cia Beal, executive director of the Senior
Center of Elk Grove, which has been in
the city for 35 years and has a member-
ship of 1,400. “People are retiring here,”
Neal says, including longtime locals and
others who have moved to Elk Grove to be
near family.
When the Senior Center moves into
its new 1,850-square-foot building in
May, “We can have hundreds of peo-
ple jumping around in our aerobics class
instead of the 30 or 40 people we have
room for now,” Beal says.
Doan notes that recent growth in Elk
Grove has improved the jobs-to-housing
ratio that contributed to the city’s subur-
ban reputation. “In the last three years,
we have retained or created 7,000 jobs
and reached a ratio of one job for every
household, which is a milestone for us,”
he says. “And with projects we have in the
pipeline, I think we can accelerate that in
the next three to four years.”
Elk Grove’s approach to growth has
put the city on the short list for many
businesses and developers looking for
projects who never considered locat-
ing in Elk Grove in the past, Doan says.
When they come calling, Doan says, “We
want them to know the city won’t hold
them up.” n
