C OMPASSIONATE I NTEGRITY T RAINING A S ECULAR E THICS A PPROACH TO C ULTIVATING P ERSONAL , S OCIAL AND E NVIRONMENTAL F LOURISHING Bring to mind three people. The first should be someone you consider a friend or loved one. The second, someone you dislike or consider an enemy, and lastly, someone who is a stranger. This stranger should be a real person whom you have seen before, perhaps someone you see regularly at a job or school or at a store you frequent but feel neither close to nor distant from. Try to imagine these three individual people in your mind as vividly as possible. (pause for 1 to 2 minutes) Now imagine, something good happening to the friend, perhaps something you would also like to happen to you. In your mind, picture this event occurring and bringing great joy to your friend and note the thoughts, feelings, and sensations that arise in your body and mind as this person experiences this event. (pause for 1 to 2 minutes) Next, imagine this exact same event happening to the stranger and note the thoughts, feelings, and sensations that arise in your body and mind as this person experiences this event. (pause for 1 to 2 minutes) Next, imagine this exact same event happening to the enemy and note the thoughts, feelings, and sensations that arise in your body and mind as this person experiences this event. (pause for 1 to 2 minutes) Consider your reactions to each of these three events and note the differences you experienced between them. (pause for 1 to 2 minutes) Now imagine something bad happening to your friend, something you would also not like to happen to you, and note the thoughts, feelings, and sensations that arise in your body and mind as this person experiences this event. (pause for 1 to 2 minutes) Next, imagine this exact same event happening to the stranger and note the thoughts, feelings, and sensations that arise in your body and mind as this person experiences this event. (pause for 1 to 2 minutes) Next, imagine this exact same event happening to the enemy and note the thoughts, feelings, and sensations that arise in your body and mind as this person experiences this event.
