After graduation, Mary continued her education with a focus in bookkeeping and secretarial skills. During World War II, while serving as a volunteer for the Red Cross, Mary met Ferrel Cates. The couple would later marry and be blessed with 61 years of marriage. Soon after the couple were married, Mary and Ferrel moved to Missouri, where they raised five children: John, Richard, Patrick, Michelle, and Nancy. In 1958,Mary took a position as a secretary and bookkeeper at Benton High School in St. Joseph, Mo., at the same school her children had at one time attended. She loved her job and retired in 1985. It took Mary more than 30 years before she would return to England for the first time since moving to the United States. It was from that point on, that Mary would be certain that she visited her beloved England every 2-3 years. Mary has numerous hobbies. Her favorite hobbies are ones that will allow her to use her hands. Mary enjoys quilting, sewing, cross-stitching, and working in the yard. She is a huge sports fan and loves the Royals, Chiefs, and her Mizzou Tigers. Even though Mary has a lot of friends and hobbies to keep her entertained and happy, her greatest joy comes from her children and grandchildren, all of whom she adores and loves. Mary enjoys life’s simple pleasures and is in her element when a baby is near. If you ask her how she is doing her signature and positive response is “I’m on TOP of the World.” According to her family, she is a wonderful cook and a patient and loving mom. Thank you Mary for sharing your story, and being Community Springs Healthcare Facility’s Resident of the Month. Are you a caring individual who would like to assist in caring for the elderly?
