Community Resource Guide For Helena VISTAS Volume 1. July. 2014 | Page 15
Phase 3 Cautiously Contributing: 4 to 5 months in
At work you will know you have embarked on phase three when you have figured
out how to acquire the skills and locate the resources you need to complete the items
on your VAD, and to do so independently. Now that you no longer need your
supervisor to explain how you will complete projects it is important to take the
initiative to explain your projects, and get periodic feedback from your supervisor.
As your experience of work becomes more purposeful and exciting be sure to pace
yourself, schedule regular time for your personal wellbeing outside of work.
Professional Development Areas
Check in with your site supervisor when you
start new projects and when you complete
them:
In an email, state the goal of your project, how
you plan to get it done, who you will collaborate
with, and when it will be complete.
“A Logs View,” MT Helena, MT
Keep on track with your VAD and maintain momentum when you are ahead
on or between items:
Review your VAD at least once per month or
whenever you feel lost.
Set and stick to deadlines:
Set concrete deadlines for when you will complete
projects and how you will measure completion.
Make yourself accountable to these deadlines by
sharing them with your site supervisor.
“Mountain in the Sky,” Trout Creek Canyon, MT
What to do when your supervisor goes on vacation:
Set concrete goals for the period of time your supervisor will be away. Share your
goals with your supervisor in an email. Gather any materials you need to accomplish
your work goals prior to them leaving. Submit your progress via email upon their
return.
