Shepherd ’ s Clinic is a free , comprehensive clinic that provides clinical services ( primary and specialty care ), behavioral health services , and mindfulness programs for uninsured patients . At Shepherd ’ s Clinic , each individual works cohesively to operate such a vital clinic that serves the community and provides access to health care to those who might otherwise lack access . Given that all the providers , nurses , and a majority of the staff at Shepherd ’ s Clinic are solely volunteering their time , I truly have encountered the most kind-hearted and well-intended individuals .
Throughout the weeks , I developed a daily rhythm and routine at Shepherd ’ s Clinic , and through that I felt immensely more comfortable and productive in my position as an intern . Amid hectic mornings , I continued contributing to our SNAP program proposal , completed reminder calls to remind patients of their upcoming appointments , screened patients , checked patients in , and as the patient left , I provided them with boxes of food from our pantry , if needed .
From a patient that experiences homelessness and food scarcity , to an individual that is Spanishspeaking and unable to access quality health care prior to being a patient at Shepherd ’ s Clinic , I understood at least a portion of their hardships , yet , in the face of such adversity , they were so incredibly gracious and thankful . Nonetheless , it was reassuring to observe the ways in which the clinic operates to assist these individuals , whether that be providing transportation to and from medical visits , supplying patients with food from our pantry and personal hygiene products , or offering a translation system so that no patient experiences language barriers at the clinic . As an advocate and a support system for patients at Shepherd ’ s Clinic , I have become cognizant of the barriers that our uninsured patients experience in accessing quality health care .
Assumed the role of pointperson for patient care , including scheduling , rescheduling , or canceling appointments
Communicated with patients on a daily basis to remind and confirm medical visits at Shepherd ’ s Clinic and for their referral appointments at other clinics in the Baltimore area
Assisted in completing and rebuilding a SNAP program to provide patients with a sustainable means to receive nutritious meals
Screened individuals in Baltimore to ensure that they are eligible to be patients at Shepherd ’ s Clinic based on our criteria
