Going into this experience this summer , I was a jumble of emotions . I was excited to work with kids , but I had never really worked with kids so young before and was anxious about how I would talk and relate to them . I was excited to be teaching about civic engagement and how to become actively involved in the community , but I was nervous because it was not a subject that I taught before and I wondered if I had the necessary qualifications and experience . I was excited to meet new people , hear about their career paths , and learn valuable lessons , but I was nervous about whether I would be too shy to even begin the conversations .
I can now happily report that this summer with SFNC has been great , and I should not have worried so much . The first thing that I can say about the center is how warm and welcoming everyone who works there is . Everyone at the center cares about everybody else ’ s well-being , both professionally and personally . I felt like a big , happy family adopted me and I gained valuable lessons about life . Regarding service learning , although I did not come in the most well-versed in teaching community service , I had so many wonderful people to consult with , who helped me make the lessons the best that I could for the kids . I was a bit jittery for the first week of instruction , but I realized that the kids are super happy and enthusiastic , and once you get them to start talking , they do not stop . After that , I felt much more comfortable interacting with them , and I took note of what worked well and what did not so that I could make the necessary changes .
I ’ ve gained so many professional skills but also made a lot of personal realizations . Now , at the end of the summer , I feel sad that my time as an intern with the center is coming to an end , but I am forever thankful to all the staff , teachers , and children at the St . Francis Neighborhood Center because they made this summer one that I will never forget .
Created lessons for various service-learning projects for children from kindergarten up to 6th grade based on the P . A . R . E ( Preparation , Action , Reflection , and Education ) model
Taught the service learning lessons for two hours a week per group for two , three-week sessions , and explored different methods for engaging lessons / activities and meaningful reflection
Broadened my understanding of certain city issues and their effects on the people in the community
Assisted with general tasks around the center
