“ Art is not what you see , but what you make others see ." This quote by Leonardo da Vinci sums up the experience that I had with Jubilee Arts this summer . My personal goals this summer were to feel inspired and find more passions . I feel like the art scene in Baltimore helps me understand how to be creative and have the confidence in expressing myself . At first , I was nervous to do something outside of what I was studying at school but instead , I grew the passion I desired . As a Public Health major , this experience showed me how art can be a tool for social justice and healing for many communities such as this West Baltimore community .
Like the quote mentioned , my primary role was showcasing the Jubilee Arts program , Youth in Business . People often talk about “ starving artists ” which is why Youth in Business is beautiful because they teach youths about entrepreneurship and the business skills needed to make a brand from their art . My role was to manage the marketing strategy and create content for social media . This was a huge responsibility because I knew that marketing is the way we receive funding and create new relationships . I felt proud of myself for learning how to create content for social media and the newsletter independently . I grew to realize that I have a passion for storytelling and community building , and hope to incorporate that into my future profession . Additionally , I learned a lot about the administrative side of running a non-profit , which deals with a lot of data and tracking of participants . A lot of grants are based on the demographics of the people we serve , which reinforces that marketing to a larger audience is very important .
My supervisor Keyarra , the director Ms . Black , Reese , and the Alumni Mentors have been the most supportive people I met this whole year . After struggling with imposter syndrome this year , I felt the most confidence in my abilities due to their hype . I believe that these are the same values that we embody , and hope to help community members feel when they come to take art classes . Through the end-of-session events , staff meetings , and classes , I was able to form meaningful connections and present how wonderful my city is . I can ' t wait to see how the skills I learned from this summer transfer over to the rest of my life !
Interviewed , trained , and aided YiB Alumni Mentors and teams to ensure a smooth and enjoyable t-shirt design process
Managed the social media page and curated the marketing strategy to increase community engagement and promote Youth in Business ’ end-of-the-year fashion show
Became a Teaching Assistant for Intro to Sewing , Clay , and Ballet and assisted in the final end-ofsession event
Oversaw administrative duties and coordinated daily operations like distributing food , observing members ' behaviors , and increasing participation in classes
