Community Impact Internships Program Booklet 2022_FINAL | Page 32

Working as a CIIP intern at HEBCAC this summer has been one of the best decisions that I have made in my college career . Despite initially feeling intimidated jumping into a job role unrelated to my majors and into a job sector I wasn ’ t really familiar with , I look back on this experience only with fondness and gratitude .
Having my own office , commuting to work every day , and wearing business casual , so much of this summer was new to me . I felt so “ adult ” in the way that I got to experience a real job that I hadn ' t been able to previously . Though I loved having my own office , I also learned I love to chat with coworkers , to the point where those types of interactions were necessary for my day-to-day life . Rebuilding the website and creating a social media presence was an adventure as someone who did not come from a computer science or communications major , but working with my supervisor to figure it out was a welcome adventure . I faced challenges I never had to face before , and ended up getting through each and every one of them .
I have learned so much , personally and professionally . Some of the most important takeaways have been hearing about the city of Baltimore and the stories of the lives of my coworkers who dedicate their lives to helping others . I am so appreciative for having the opportunity to personally get to experience more of Baltimore . I have learned the power of observation , the value of my own opinions and ideas , and my curiosity and yearning to get to know Baltimore has only grown . I am not sure what I will do after this upcoming academic year , but wherever I do end up , I will bring along the leadership skills , communication skills , and personal confidence I learned to value over this internship period .
I won ’ t lie , coming into this internship period was nerve wracking , but my amazing cohort and CIIP staff have been there for me since day one . I had not expected to grow so close to my peers , or to feel so open with them in such a short period of time . I am grateful that it was the way it happened though , and can ’ t imagine having my summer without them . There were some ups and downs , and definitely some learning curves , but with the support of my cohort , and the lessons from orientation , nothing I faced was ever too much for me . I have learned so much , gained so many valuable memories , and simply cannot believe that summer is already coming to a close . In a way , this internship coming to a close is really the beginning of an era , and I am so grateful for that .
Facilitated brainstorming and discussion with board and staff members to develop HEBCAC ’ s mission statement
Compiled community and organization contacts into a single comprehensive resource to increase ease of communication
Established a clear online presence by updating HEBCAC ’ s website , and started social media accounts to increase transparency and communication with the community
