Working at Healthcare for the Homeless ( HCH ) was an incredibly enriching experience and allowed me to immerse myself in a sector of nonprofits and community-based organizations that I don ’ t think I would have had the opportunity to do otherwise . We are often taught about the social determinants of health and policies that trickle down and impact all of us to some extent in our public health classes , but being at the ground level and observing first-hand how homelessness and a lack of financial stability impacts the health of the clients HCH serves was extremely eye-opening and allowed me to realize what it truly means to be engaged in public health .
During my time at HCH , I immersed myself in several different fields within the behavioral health team through conversations and collaborations with my colleagues . These conversations , in addition to my primary tasks such as creating trainings for staff and updating the case management resource guide , helped me obtain a better understanding of how resources can be leveraged to serve those who are in challenging situations . I ’ ve learned that there is a plethora of resources not just in Baltimore , but nationwide that can support the health of those facing homelessness . It is not necessarily a lack of resources that is fueling this issue but rather the accessibility of these resources and lack of resolution to the stigma behind those facing homelessness .
Every time I talk to my colleagues , I am inspired by their desire to look beyond stigma and biases , and work in a community with open minds and welcoming arms . Navigating around the trauma of others is no easy feat , but it is evident that my colleagues are passionate about what they do . After being exposed to the “ person-first ” manner of working with clients , I ‘ m inspired to re-evaluate the behaviors that have been dictated as norms that support the inequitable structures we reside in today . My experience this summer has been amazing and is just the first step in my journey of working towards a more just society .
Led development of trainings on motivational interviewing and suicide for behavioral health staff
Conducted outreach to 100 + community-based organizations , clinics , and property managers to update the case management community resource guide used to refer clients
Attended REI trainings on unconscious bias in healthcare and decolonizing the human service sector
Assisted with packaging and organizing produce bags for HCH ’ s food pantry
