Community Impact Internships Program Booklet 2022_FINAL | Page 30

From my time at the Hampden Family Center , I feel as though I have come face-to-face with the disparities and diversity that exist in the neighborhoods of Baltimore . My responsibilities during this placement primarily revolved around providing summer enrichment programming eight hours a day , four days a week to a unique group of youth . One distinct characteristic is that half of the group are members of families that received SNAP benefits , whereas the other half were from more well-off families . For example , I encountered a family that lived in Hampden because of Hopkins in particular , which further pointed out the university ’ s role in gentrification and reinforcing the " White L ". Even the kids recognize these neighborhood disparities in some sense , remarking , “ Hampden is a lot safer than some parts of Baltimore ."
However , it has been difficult navigating the differences of family income between participants of the camp , because they don ’ t seem to notice or have not developed sensitivity towards the situation . In one instance , a couple of kids were complaining while we were at the zoo because we couldn ’ t let them spend the money they brought , despite their parents having received explicit instructions that it was important to refrain from doing so since a few families would not be able to do the same . Balancing on a tightrope between “ fun and fair ” during field trips draws parallel imagery to the tightrope that Hampden lies upon .
Every morning I would walk up 36th St ., aka “ The Avenue ”. Lined with eateries , boutiques , and tasty treats , The Avenue is a popular destination and likely generates a lot of revenue ; yet housing insecurity remains a prevalent issue . The sharp contrast between these lived experiences shows how even Hampden , a neighborhood in the " White L ", can be an example of disparity in Baltimore . Fortunately , some of the unhoused individuals I would see on my way to HFC or with the summer enrichment participants on our way to Roosevelt Park would become familiar faces at the center ' s food distributions on Fridays , where I would help hand out uneaten meals provided for our summer programming . I hope that through this internship and summer programming , I have helped equip these young people with the empathic and reflective understanding necessary for undoing the harms of income disparity in Hampden .
Developed and facilitated an inperson summer enrichment program to a diverse group of 7 – 11 year-olds focused on social emotional learning
Mediated conflict resolution between program participants encouraging the development of good character and selfreflection / awareness
Coordinated the supervision of 15-25 young people for 32 hours per week on daily walks to the park , pool , and library , as well as field trips
Distributed food to members of the Hampden community facing housing insecurity once per week
