The summer program at Greenmount East Leadership Project has been an exciting , educational , and immensely valuable experience . My supervisor Isaiah Johnson and I created a summer curriculum for the personal and professional development of 13 youth ages 13-18 .
From a personal development viewpoint , we created workshops on healthy relationships with a focus on identifying unhealthy patterns of behavior and effective communication . We also had extensive workshops on communication techniques , both in the youth ’ s personal lives and in the workplace . These workshops included the differences between passive , aggressive , and assertive communication , and utilized role playing to provide the youth with an opportunity to practice their communication skills outside of taught theory . We aided in mental health techniques by discussing coping mechanisms and building self-care into our curriculum , as well as establishing a workout routine and healthy eating practices for the physical health of the youth .
Professionally , we ran computer literacy classes to acquaint the youth to an ever-growing technological workforce , with units on Microsoft Word , PowerPoint , and Excel , finding appropriate sources online , social media awareness , and safe internet browsing skills . The youth worked on developing resumes and seeking future employment opportunities to add to their resume beyond the Greenmount East Leadership Project internship . In conjunction with their resume building , we practiced mock interviews to help the youth in their future job ambitions . In terms of higher education , we set up college visits for the youth to help provide advance planning for their future academic careers and provide insight to college academics . Lastly , the youth had workshops featuring financial literacy and the best ways to budget , invest , and save money .
Developed a lasting curriculum for Greenmount East Leadership Project
Organized programming for youth on finial literacy , computer literacy , healthy relationships , communication
Led job readiness trainings , including resume workshops and interview techniques
While my primary role was to set up the summer workshops , I also learned a lot about the structure of nonprofits , grant writing , and working with youth . Beyond the practical skills I learned this summer , I had the opportunity to connect with the Greenmount and other East Baltimore communities through both community wellness programs , like our weekly clean-up volunteering , and community health work . Overall , working with Greenmount East Leadership Project was a great experience .
