SUPPORTING SUCCESSFUL LEARNERS
Structure and Routines
Structure is created by consistent routines and rules . Consistent structure and routines teaches your child how to take care of themselves , behavior expectations and how to interact with others . Children crave consistent and predictable routines . Here are some strategies to help you provide structure and routines at home :
• Use visuals . Pictures can be used to remind your child what tasks need to be done and in what order . Pictures also work well to help your child remember behavior expectations . For example , a picture of a child walking can remind your child they are expected to use walking feet in the house .
• Use simple terms like , “ First … then …” For example “ First put away your toys , then you can play outside .”
• Be consistent ! Consistent routines help form healthy habits and behaviors .
Importance of Play
Young children learn best through play . When playing with others , your child will learn how to cooperate , share , and build relationships . Play provides your child a chance to practice problem-solving and how to handle stress and conflict . Here are some tips to remember when your child is playing :
• Participate enthusiastically . By becoming involved in your child ’ s play , you are helping grow your child ’ s imagination and self-esteem .
• Watch your child play . If your child appears happy , leave them alone and let them play . If they seam bored , re-direct the activity or join in on the fun !
• If your child gets in an argument with someone do not immediately jump in . Try and let them work it out first . This does mean abandon them , just listen , and observe . Step in if you see or hear your child needing help .
