CRYSTALS GLITZ LAB Learn why crystals are magical reflectors of light and the science behind them. In this camp, where science meets fun, we’ll have a blast while we grow crystals, create enchanting crystal accessories like pendants and rings, and explore the science behind crystals and light. Add a pinch of imagination as you create your own super cool packages to take home your very personal creations. Students working in pairs will build models and discuss the engineering science behind each. This fun, hands-on class shows students how engineering can be fun and silly, yet still educational. Students will then be challenged to improve the model and customize their creations. Possible models include the Never-Look-Back Machine, Skittletops, Do-Nothing Machine, Coat Hanger Daredevil, Trapdoor Cable Car Parachute Machine, Rubberband Racer, Balloon-Powered Car, and other Crazy Action Contraptions. Each day, students participate in engineering challenges to earn points for their houses like creating the farthest reaching Golden Snitch Launcher and the fastest Gringott Cart to reach the vaults. At the end of camp, the house with the most points is awarded the house cup, a great honour! Students will find themselves the lone survivors of a zombie apocalypse and learn that the undead are coming to find them. The challenge is to stay alive until scientists find a cure. Be careful! One bite and you will become one of them. We will work in teams and use the Engineering Design Process to create projects to help you make the best choices for your survival. We will make and take home multiple rockets of varying difficulty. We will use these rockets and airplanes to investigate basic aeronautical concepts including propulsion, thrust, lift, drag and more. Note: Parents will be asked to contribute two, - liter soda bottles (empty) for 2 different experiments. Working each day in teams, students will construct fun LEGO models, experiment with programs, and compete in robotic challenges. Robot building, block programming, and teamwork will be part of each day’s activities. Final challenges will be centered around hitting targets and a sumo battle.
