(Read related article on page 12 of this issue for more information). When arranging for the party, we were asked if we were going to arrive in time to help deliver “Meals on Wheels” as part of their ongoing commitment to the community. Sadly, it is quite a drive from Des Moines to Fort Madison so we were not able to participate. The Parking lot was nearly full when we arrived, and Marketing Director, Carla Meierotto, was not in the bank. It was explained that she was out of the bank, delivering “First Day of School” gift bags to each and every member of the Class of 2026, (also known as Kindergartners!) but she was planning to swing by and pick up the pizzas on her way back to the bank. Another group of employees were out delivering the aforementioned meals, and yet ANOTHER pair of community bankers had accompanied their “Passport Club” on an excursion to Rock Island for a matinee buffet and stage production. (Thus the full parking lot!). As we waited in the employee break and lunch room, I noticed on the bulletin board, information about the banks entry in the upcoming Rodeo parade, two weeks hence. The striking note was that the bank intended to have TWO floats in the parade, one depicting banking in the 1888, the year of the bank’s founding and the other depicting current day banking. A very significant undertaking for certain, but I overheard a number of conversations discussing the Lee County Bank & Trust Company work already under way on the floats as well. Marketing Director, Carla Meierotto Well, the staff consumed a record number of carries away empty pizza boxes from pizzas from three different sources of pizza in the celebratory pizza party. In order the community. Welcome New CBI Members The Community Bankers of Iowa would like to welcome the following company to the association, and thank them for their support: community, the bank ordered pizzas As we returned home that afternoon, I reflected on how dedicated to the community Lee from three area restaurants. County Bank & Trust Company is. Incidentally, Fort Madison has two community banks of similar size headquartered there and three branches of other community banks. No megabanks or mega credit unions to be seen. Just a community being served competitively by community financial institutions. I am sure that some of the activities of the bank we visited were influenced by activities of the other bank and the community was the better for it. I overheard a few comments about the other banks activities in a respectful way, as it should be. Clearly this community, in addition to two public parks each with a restored band stand, is well supported by community banks. In Fort Madison, every month is Community Banking Month. Community banks have a story to tell, a dedication to the community, and in these days, a great opportunity to grow their business by contrasting our business model from others. Celebrate community banking month all year round as your way of developing your bank, brand, and community.
