Recap: 2014 Spring Community Bank Summits
Bankers Educated on the Ag Industry in Iowa
Community bankers from across Iowa gathered in Waterloo
and Riverside April 22nd & 23rd for networking and education
at the 4th Annual Spring Community Bank Summits. Over 70
members joined to hear presentations on security breaches
and the Ag economy in Iowa.
Linda Echard, President & CEO of ICBA Bancard, discussed
the procedure behind the Target breach among other incidents.
“The worst breach to date was the Heartland Payment Systems
breach in 2009, compromising approximately 130 million
cards.” Echard continued, “It is important to note however, that
Heartland is the largest noted processor breach, while Target is
the largest retailer to experience a compromise.”
Echard also discussed best practices on how banks can
avoid future incidents. A good way to be proactive would be to
monitor as they are seeing an increase in customers calling on
transactions they don’t recognize, and looking for any increase
in fraud losses. Banks could also watch for any indications that
show fraud occurring in one place or in similar locations, such
as stores. Reporting fraudulent transactions to the partnering
associations and also monitoring the news for any information
related to compromises is also helpful.
The meeting continued with presentations from three experts
in the ag economy. The presentations revolved around Iowa’s
new water initiative, researching point sources and nonpoint
sources of pollution and teaming up with industrial partners as
well as ag partners to reduce the runoff into rivers and streams.
Also, a new technology with drones is entering the Ag economy
and will be available at retail fertilizer and chemical businesses.
They currently focus on plot mapping and crop scouting to
help producers determine what to apply in certain areas in
the field. This will help to ensure appropriate use of fertilizer,
chemicals and seed that should be applied. Other discussion
revolved around land values, averaging $8,000 per acre across
the state, and Iowa’s ranking in the top five for hogs, corn,
soybeans and egg production.
