Educating the Next Generation of Community Banking Leaders at the 2014 LOT Leadership Development Summit A Day On Iowa’s Capitol Hill CBI’s Leaders of Tomorrow Development Group held their 11th Annual Conference on March 27th & 28th, kicked off by spending the day on Capitol Hill in Des Moines. Orientation was held on Day 1 in one of the historic committee rooms by CBI Lobbyist Jeff Boeyink and CBI CEO Don Hole. Summit attendees were then addressed by Representative Tom Sands (R-Columbus Junction), Chairman of the Iowa House Ways and Means Committee, Representative Chris Hall (D-Sioux City), Ranking member of LOT Members pose in the House Chamber the House Commerce during the 2014 Summit’s Capitol Tour Committee and Nancy Dunkel (D-Dubuque) Member of the Agriculture and Transportation Committees and former Community Banker. Chairman Sands, who is also a community banker from Columbus Junction State Bank, shared with the group details of House Study Bill 674, which would reduce the franchise tax on banks in order to provide parity with credit unions who pay no equivalent tax. A tour of the Capitol building concluded events on the Hill. A networking dinner at Quinton’s Bar and Deli in Des Moines’ East Village was held that evening, with more than 50 people in attendance. The Summit continued on Day 2 with a presentation by Debi Durham, State Representative Tom Director of Iowa Econonic Development Sands discussing tax policy Authority (IDEA). Two different breakout sessions on were offered next, discussing Operations and Ag Banking topics. Keynote speaker Charlie Wittmack closed the Summit with his presentation “Committed to the Core”, where he outlined his stint during the World Triathlon. Wittmack, a internationally-renowned explorer and athlete, created and developed the Triathlon, an 8,000 mile trek including a swim the length of the Thames River in England, a bike ride across Europe and Asia, and culminating in a hike to the summit of Mt. Everest. Wittmack encouraged attendees to consider their sense of committment to their dreams, and to realize that they as bankers are helping their customers and communities to realize their dreams as well.
