Clara Manton was born Dec. 3,
1933, to Howard and Myrtle Anderson
in Kansas City, Mo. She was the second
child, having two brothers and one sis-
ter.
Clara grew up in the Kansas City ar-
ea until she was 15, when her
family moved to California. “My
father was in the Coast Guard, and jobs
were very few, so we moved to
Monterey, right by the ocean. I loved it.
We could swim and fish anytime we
wanted to,” says Clara.
She graduated from Monterey High
School in 1951, but before this, she
met the man she was going to marry in
a very unique way.
“My father met this boy Chuck, who
was in the Navy. He would bring him by
the house and they would go fishing in
the morning. One day, my father told
me that I better get out of bed. There
was a nice looking boy coming over to
go fishing. I wasn’t interested in him at
first, but he kept showing up to pick me
up from church or work. So eventually, I
fell in love and we were married on Feb.
2, 1951,” says Clara.
The couple had three children: Susie,
lives in Lebanon; Bob, resides in Stout-
land; and Charlie, lives in Gravois Mills.
The couple also have five grandchildren
and two greatgranddaughters.
When Clara was pregnant with
Susie, the Mantons moved to
Chuck’s hometown in Mississippi. Then
in 1969, they moved to Camdenton to
be closer to Clara’s family.
Clara began working in retail sales,
and loved it. She became manager for
several different clothing stores, and
managed Spence Clothing Store for 24
years. When she was 65, she went to
cosmetology school and became a
beautician. For the next 12 years, she
worked at three different shops,
enjoyed cutting hair, and listening to
interesting stories.
After retirement, Clara introduced
the first Red Hatter’s Club in
Camdenton. This mainly consisted of
church members. The club enjoyed go-
ing out to lunch and having fun. Clara
also enjoyed making things such as
bird houses, dolls, afghans, and blue
jean quilts. She continues to do craft-
ing activities at Colonial Springs. Clara
also enjoys playing bingo, getting her
nails done, and visiting with the ladies.
But most of all, she loves her family
and enjoys their visits.
