Resident Spotlight Vernon Jones

Vernon Jones was born May 18 , 1927 , to Veron and Bessie Jones . He was born in Webster County , just west of the Mission Chapel Church which he has been a member of all of his life .
Vernon was the only child and helped his father on their milk farm . “ I milked cows by hand when I was 10 years old . The first money I ever made was when I replanted a field of corn for 25 cents ,” said Vernon . “ I took that money and purchased a calf with it . That heifer yielded many calves and lots of milk for us .”
Vernon began school in a one room school house at Boyd in 1933 , then transferred to Olive in 35 ’. Then in 1937 he consolidated to Elkland High School where he graduated in 1945 .
One night Vernon and a few of his friends met up with a few girls from Charity . This is where he met his future bride , Leota Jean Gann . They dated for two years and were married on July 11 , 1946 at a preacher ’ s house .
That same year , he was asked to substitute on a rural mail route , which eventually became a full time job . He also managed his own dairy farm . “ This was the best decision I have ever made ,” said Vernon . “ It was a busy life , but I enjoyed it . After a few years into my job , I had to give up dairy farming , so I became a beef farmer . I retired from the mail route after 31 years .”
The couple had three children , two boys and a girl . Donald lives in Competition , Connie resides in Elkland , and Ronald
passed away in 2007 . The Jones have 10 grandchildren , 13 great grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren . Vernon and Leota enjoyed 61 wonderful years together . She was and still is the love of his life .
When asked what was the strangest thing that happened to him on his route , he commented , “ A kid decided to play a prank on me . He took a cat and put it in the mailbox and when I opened it up , the cat jumped into my truck . I ’ m not sure who was more scared , the cat or me , but I wouldn ’ t let that boy know it .”
Vernon loves his cattle . It has been his passion all his life . He still owns several head , but his son and grandsons help to farm them . “ The first thing I ’ m gonna do when I get out of here is go check on my Herfords ,” said Vernon .
Vernon came to Colonial Springs in 2019 . He is a joy to be around . He loves talking about his family and reminiscing about farming , cattle , and his mail carrying days . “ There ’ s nothing better in life than raising your family on a farm and the country lifestyle . I wish we could all go back to that way of living .”
Thank you Vernon for allowing us to get to know you a little bit better .
