Nellie was the baby of the family, having one brother and five sisters. “I grew up on a farm and since I only had one brother, us girls had to pitch in our fair share. I remember gathering the cattle and having to help milk them. It was hard work for all of us,” said Nellie. Nellie went to grade school at Long Lane then transferred to Buffalo. She graduated from Buffalo High School in 1948. “One day when my sister and I went to the movies in Buffalo, I was introduced to Bill Turner. A little while later, he asked me out on a date and I accepted,” said Nellie. Nellie dated Bill for about a year then they went to Arkansas and got married. “I was too young to get married in Missouri so we went to Arkansas. When we got back, I went to my house and he went home to his,” said Nellie. The Turners lived in Long Lane all of their married life. Bill was a car- penter and Nellie worked at both Teter’s in Bolivar and HD Lee in Lebanon. When she wasn’t working, she helped Bill on the farm taking care of their beef cattle. The Turner’s had one son, Jackie, who resides in Long Lane. Two grandchildren are Nellie’s pride and joy. She enjoys them so much! Nellie is a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Buffalo. She used to teach Sunday School to the little children. “I just love children. They are so sweet to be around,” said Nellie. Until Bill’s passing, the Turner’s enjoyed going camping and fishing. Nellie also sewed many hand- stitched quilts which she enjoyed making. Nellie came to Colonial Springs last December. She enjoys attending several activities includ- ing bingo, social gatherings, church, Bible studies and musical events. Thank you Nellie for allowing us to get to know you a little better.
