Norma was the second oldest child in her family, having six brothers and three sisters. She grew up in northern Missouri and southern Iowa. She had to quit school after grade school because her mother became ill and she took care of her and her family. “I began working away from home when I was 9 years old. My first job was to help an elderly couple with their housework. I really didn’t like the man because he always wore long johns and every time I hung his long johns on the wash line, they would hit me in the face and during the winter time, they would freeze. This did not feel good,” said Norma. “My other jobs while growing up were working in the hay fields, shocking corn and timothy, and babysitting kids older than me.” One day a gentleman by the name of Hubert Stutzman came to visit his sister in Iowa. My sister was dating his brother at the time. I met him through her and we fell in love. We were married Feb. 9, 1950, and were married 63 years. He passed away in 2013. “We had a wonderful life together. When we retired, we traveled all over the US in our motor home, attending gas engine shows. The only place we never got to visit was the northeast,” said Norma. The couple had three beautiful children. Allen and Bob are deceased and Vicky lives in Pleasant Hope. Norma has four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and three, with one on the way, great-great grandchildren. “I love it when they come visit me,” said Norma. “They are the treasures of my life.” Norma and Hubert moved to Walnut Grove in 1983 after they retired. “Every July we would come to visit my brother. We fell in love with the area and decided to move here,” said Norma. Last October, Norma came to Colonial Springs. She is a joy and inspiration to many as she has come a long way since her admission. She enjoys coming to many activities and working on puzzles in her room. But the highlight of her day is when her great – great granddaughter, Elana, comes to visit. Thank you Norma for allowing us to get to know you better. You are a jewel to Colonial Springs. Are you a caring individual who would like to assist in caring for the elderly?
