Music and Memor y Grant
Awarded to Colonial Springs
Recently, Colonial Springs Healthcare
Center was selected as a recipient
for the MC5 Music and Memory
Certification Incentive Grant. This
grant will be used to train our staff
on assembling personalized music
playlists that are delivered in iPods
and other digital devices for those
diagnosed with dementia.
Research has shown that music
may have the ability to help dementia
patients recall memories and to assist
them with conversation and socialization. The goal of the MC5 Music
and Memory program is to use personalized music to improve seniors’
quality of life. This program’s plan is
to make aims to make personalized
therapeutic music a standard of
care throughout the industry. Colonial Springs was one of 40 long
term care facilities in Missouri who
were awarded the MC5 grant.
The Music and Memory program
will provide Colonial Springs with a
starter kit to help cover initial equipment costs including 10 iPods (five
gently shuffles and five gently used
iPods), 10 headphones, 10 AC
adapters, and one iTunes gift card.
The staff will attend a MC5 Music
and Memory orientation as well as
additional training.
“I am so excited to begin the MC5
Music and Memory program with
our ladies and gentlemen. Just
think of how much we love to
listen to music and how a special
song brings back memories from
our past. This is what Music and
Memory is all about...bringing our
resident’s life from the past back to
the present, “ says Patrice Melton,
activity director.
Patrice is spearheading the Music
and Memory program at Colonial
Springs. “It is my goal to have more
than ten iPods in our facility in the
near future. Musical activities is an
activity where everyone benefits.”
If you would like more information
about the program or if you would
like to donate an iPod or iTunes music
for the program, feel free to contact
Patrice at 417-345-2228.
