Marvin was the seventh of 9 chil- dren, having 6 brothers and 2 sisters. When he was 10 years old, his fami- ly moved to Buffalo. “I started school earlier than most kids. Back then you could start within six months of turning five. Since my birthday was in January, my momma sent me to school early, said Marvin. “I graduated when I was 17 years old in 1958. Marvin joined the Army that same year and served 2 years in Germany. “It was the most beautiful place I had ever lived. The countryside was so mesmerizing. I would go back in a heartbeat,” said Snap. When Marvin returned home from the Army, he held down different jobs, then worked in an auto parts store for 3 years. Then he moved to California and worked for McDonnell Aircraft Company fixing planes. He signed a government contract to go to Vietnam and work on helicopters, thinking he could make good money and go to Australia. “I only stayed there for 3 months and that was enough.” After returning from Vietnam, he spent the next 18 years in the drilling business with Doc Hawkins and Donnie McCarthy. He wasn’t done yet. He decided to start his own food concession business, Rice Concessions. For the next 22 years he traveled to picnics and fairs selling bratwursts, smoked sausage, corn dogs, hot dogs, nachos and drinks. “I traveled everywhere including Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas. I was a pretty popular vendor. People liked my brats the best, said Snap” After retiring, Marvin enjoyed going to the stock car races. He “The same year I came in here, I waterskied at the lake. I enjoyed this so much.” Marvin is a joy to be around. He likes socializing with anyone who will stop and visit with him. He will talk to you about anything except how he got the name, Snap. So if you can get it out of him, let me know. Thanks Snap for allowing us to get to know you a little bit better. Are you a caring individual who would like to assist in caring for the elderly?
