Mae was one of three girls. “We grew up on a farm. Since there weren’t any boys in our family, the girls had to do the chores. Life was tough. We cut and hauled wood, planted corn, took care of the garden, and canned fruits and vegetables,” said Mae. Mae went to Nurse School up to the 8th grade. She had to quit due to the passing of her father. Her mother needed help at home, so this was the best solution for that time. Her mother and sisters moved to Summerville to be closer to her grandmother. This way the family could help each other out when needed. One evening, Mae and her sister’s went to the Lebanon carnival. Here, she met Warren Calton and his broth- ers. The boys asked the girls if they could take them home, and they did. Three of the Calton boys ended up da- ting three of the Randolph girls, and two of them ended up getting married. Of course one of them was Mae and Warren. The couple were married 19 wonderful years. “Even though our life together was cut short. I still love him today as much as I loved him when we got married,” said Mae. From the time Mae was able, she was a worker. While her husband drove a truck, Mae worked at Beards Laundry for 13 years, until it burned down. For the next 13 years she worked at Dutch Maid Dry Cleaners as a presser. After the owners retired, she said “I’m retir- ing too,” but she didn’t. “Hershel Piercy asked me to watch their children for a week. Well, five years later, I finally retired from babysitting.” Mae enjoyed retirement. She took care of her lawn, and trimmed her bushes. Neighbors would always admire her yard. She enjoyed going shopping and to church with her friends. Mae continues to be active in playing bingo, exercising and reading Western books. She also enjoys socializing with the ladies at women’s groups and tea parties. Mae is a very social person and a joy to be around! Thank you, Mae, for allowing us to get to know you better.
