Resident Spotlight
Dorothy Allen
We would like to introduce to you this
year’s MHCA CSHCC Queen, Dottie Allen.
Dorothy “Dottie” Allen was born March 26,
1941, to Marcela and Richard Douglas in
Fort Worth, Texas. Dottie has one brother,
Richard. She grew up in the Fort Worth and
Wink areas in Texas. “It was a peaceful and
carefree atmosphere growing up in that era.
We never had to worry about the things kids
have to worry about now. We used to roller
skate and ride bikes all day long in the
neighborhood until our parents called us in
to eat,” said Dottie. “I am so glad I grew up
when I did.”
Dottie went to school in Monahans,
Texas. She married the man of her dreams
while she was in high school and later received
her diploma by taking correspondence
courses. “Yes, the man of my dreams.
His name was Doyle Allen. I almost ran
over him with my car the first time I saw
him. We later met through a group of
friends. That first night we were talking
about me loving to sing country & western
songs, so he gave me his black cowboy hat.
He said he didn’t need it because he was in
the Marines. I treasured it until it wore out. I
wore it every time I sang at local singing
events and jamborees,” said Dottie.
The Allen’s’ were married in 1958 in
Wickett, Texas. They had two sons, Jerry
and David. She has seven grandchildren and
three great grandchildren. She loves her
grandbabies! After Doyle was discharged
from the Marines, he went to school to be a
mortician. The Allen’s spent the rest of their
married life in East Houston where Dottie
worked as a Floral Designer until Richards
passing in 1996.
Dottie moved to Buffalo, Missouri
where her sons and family were living. “I
would drive around in a red sports car and
everyone would just stare at me,” said
Dottie. “I didn’t care what they thought. I
enjoyed life, no matter what was thrown at
me.”
Dottie worked at Copper-Atteberry
Floral for the next 20 years designing arrangements
until it closed. “I have always
been a crafty person. When I was a young
girl I enjoyed making beaded necklaces and
jewelry. Today I make bread dough jewelry.
I will tell you a little more about that in
my interview. It is just that, jewelry made
out of bread,” commented Dottie. “I made a
necklace and earrings for last year’s Golden
Age Games and won first place in the
jewelry division.
In May 2019, Dottie came to Colonial
Springs and has brought joy to many other
residents’ lives. Her positive attitude, beautiful
smile and pleasant disposition follows
her everywhere she goes. Her talents are
many and she lives by her daily motto of
“Live your life with Jesus Christ and He
will bring you happiness.”
