Thelma was born Nov. 13, 1919, to
Johnny and Eva Hood at her home in
Polk county. When Thelma was four,
her mother passed away. Her
father moved to California. Thelma
stayed here on the family farm and
was raised by her grandparents.
One day while Thelma was at a
gathering at Hopewell Church, she met
Herbert Marsh. “It was love at first
sight,” said Thelma. The Marsh’s were
married at a preacher’s house in
Bolivar in May 1938.
The couple had three beautiful
daughters. Marilyn Garrison is the old-
est and lives in Springfield; Evelyn
McDaniel is the middle child, residing
in Buffalo; and the baby is Brenda
Howard who lives in Springfield. Thel-
ma has three grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.
“Herbert and I made a career in
farming. I guess my favorite part was
milking cows, by hand of course! Some
cows were nice, while others were very
messy, if you know what I mean! Some-
times they would flip their tails and you
know what would fly,” said Thelma.
Herbert passed away in 1985, after
enjoying 47 years of wedded bliss.
After his passing, Thelma moved to
town and started babysitting. She
taught the children their ABC’s and
how to count before they started
school. Her daycare children are all
grown now, but still have very fond
memories of Thelma.
Gardening and quilting are Thelma’s
favorite past times. She enjoyed grow-
ing Iris’ and Day Lilly’s. “They were so
beautiful. I had various colors of each,”
said Thelma. She lost count of how
many quilts she made in all different
patterns. She entered her quilts and
flowers in the Dallas County Fair and
has won numerous blue ribbons. “Too
many to count,” she said. “I even won
money at the Louisburg Picnic for being
the oldest lady.”
Thelma came to Colonial Springs in
May 2013. She is very active in
activities, enjoying bingo, gospel music
and church services the most. “I enjoy
the activities, but what I love most is
when my daughters come see me. They
are the joy of my life and I look forward
to their visits,” said Thelma.
Thank you Thelma, for allowing us to
get to know you a little better.
