Hazel Claspill was born on
Aug.27, 1942, in Springfield, Mo.,
to Edgar and Mary Heath. She was
the middle child in her family
having two older and two younger
brothers. “When you are the only
girl, you become a boy quickly,”
Hazel said with a giggle. “The one
good thing about it is that my daddy
spoiled me.”
Hazel graduated from Central
High School in 1958. “It was so
much nicer growing up in the
1950’s. Life was so much simpler,”
Hazel said. “ There were no drugs
and violence like there is today.”
One night, when she was with
one of her friends, she met James
Claspill. After a year of dating, Hazel
and James traveled to Miami, Okla.,
and got married
The couple moved to Long Lane
where they lived in his grandmother’s house for the next 50
years. For 15 years, the Claspills
milked cows and ran a dairy farm.
In 1975, Hazel began working for
the Buffalo School District as the
Head of Food Services. For the next
28 years, Hazel enjoyed making
food for hundreds for children. She
retired from her position in 2003.
After retirement, Hazel and James
made plans to travel, but James
became very ill. Sadly, in 2006,
James passed away.
Hazel has two biological children:
Tricia,who resides in Long Lane,
and Erwin, who lives here at Colonial Springs with Hazel. She also has
two step-children. She has two
grandchildren and five great grandchildren, who she adores very
much! “I just enjoyed playing with
my grandbabies. They are my life,”
explains Hazel. “We loved to make
cookies.”
In her spare time, if she is not in
an activity or visiting with her family,
Hazel can be found embroidering.
Congratulations Hazel on being
selected as Colonial Springs
Healthcare Center’s August
Resident of the Month!
