RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT
Edna Jewell Brakebill
Edna Jewell Brakebill was born on April 16 , 1921 , to Jim and Edna Lee in New Mexico . Edna Jewell was the oldest , having one sister and one brother .
She grew up in New Mexico and when she got older , her family moved to Pleasant Hope . She graduated from Pleasant Hope High School in 1938 .
“ When I was young , I would get bored watching livestock , so I would sneak away and go fishing for tarantulas . Most people would be afraid of them , but not me ,” said Jewell . “ I met my husband , Jack , at church . We were married Feb . 5 , 1939 , in Bolivar . We didn ’ t always agree , but we agreed to disagree . He did what he wanted to do and I did what I wanted to do . We were married 65 wonderful years . I miss him so much ,” commented Jewell .
The Brakebill ’ s had one child , Gary . Edna has three grandchildren , five great grandchildren , 11 greatgreat grandchildren and one greatgreat-great granddaughter . That makes six generations .
“ We enjoyed farming while we lived in Missouri . I would haul the hay from the field to the barn and one time , I was driving too fast and I dumped it all . We would stack our
hay in the top of the barn loft . It was quite an ordeal ,” said Jewell .
The Brakebill ’ s moved to Oregon where Jack worked at a sawmill and Edna worked at a laundry mat as steam presser . She convinced the owners that she would work for free for a week to be trained . She didn ’ t do this very long until they found out she sewed . Then she became a clothes mender .
They eventually moved back to Missouri to farm . When asked about retirement , Jewell said , “ You never retire if you have a farm . You always have to keep it up .”
Jewell is a joy to be around . She is as spry as a 20 year old and loves to talk about her family . She loves each and everyone of them , especially her grandbabies . They all are the apples of her eye .
Jewell will turn 100 years old this month . Let ’ s all wish her a very special day .
