The program was hosted by Kirkland & Ellis and was well attended by approximately 200 Fellows and non-Fellows . Take some time to review the materials posted on the College website .
Finally , the College Foundation announced on December 2 , 2024 grants of $ 599,050 to legal services organizations in eighteen ( 18 ) states and the District of Columbia to support pro bono programs in bankruptcy and insolvency law and $ 56,000 in DEI grants to five ( 5 ) organizations to help students attend conferences and obtain bankruptcy and insolvency work experience through internships . The College Foundation is the largest donor in the Country to legal services organizations for pro bono for bankruptcy and insolvency services .
Now we are off for the Holidays . While I have ya , I want to offer some advice on what to agree to and what not to agree to at that holiday cocktail party assuming you really want to capture the joy and spirit of the Holidays . My story isn ’ t exactly about a holiday party but it came up at a festive cocktail party earlier this year and led to one of the most inspiring stories of my career .
Last April , I attended a reception in San Antonio hosted by Dean Patty Roberts of St . Mary ’ s University School of Law . Dean Roberts is a spectacular legal educator who came to St . Mary ’ s , my alma mater , a few years ago to lead the law school . The reception was at the Dean ’ s home . I figured if the Dean of my law school invited me to her home , I should go .
Once I arrived at the reception , Dean Roberts said she had someone who I had to talk to about a bankruptcy matter . Shaking my head affirmatively , I said , “ Sure .” I grabbed a glass of wine and within a few minutes Mary Stich , a San Antonio solo practitioner , pounced on me about a pro bono case she was handling that had a “ tiny ” bankruptcy issue . I knew Mary from when she had been on the faculty at St . Mary ’ s several years earlier . I downed a second glass of wine and Mary told me about her clients and asked me if I could help her . Feeling generous and festive , I said , “ Sure .”
As I learned over the coming weeks , I had agreed to help represent Martha and Mario , the Conservators
