New MD for Eurocool as
David Mackay says farewell
R
odney Taylor joined Eurocool on
15 July 2018 for David Mackay to
hand over the managing director
post as his retirement at the end of the
month drew nearer.
On 28 July, Eurocool and greater
Beijer Ref family officially said farewell
to Mackay at the Recam offices in
Reuven, Johannesburg. Management,
employees, and others who have worked
with Mackay over the years, got together
to celebrate his career and wish him well
on his retirement. Even Bruce Thomson,
previous Eurocool managing director, was
in attendance.
Jurie Benade, Metraclark managing
director, spoke about Mackay’s career
history and extensive involvement in
the industry over the years. “It’s been a
long road and you have made a great
difference in a lot of people’s lives,” said
Benade.
Benade took the opportunity to
formally welcome Taylor (previously
managing director of Carel) in his new
post as Eurocool managing director.
“Eurocool has been left in very capable
hands,” said Benade.
Taylor then said a few words about
Mackay, whom he met two decades
ago in 1998. “David has set a very high
standard and leaves a fantastic legacy
behind,” said Taylor. “You have a good
reputation in the industry and you will be
sorely missed,” he said to Mackay.
Then it was time for some gifts and
Mackay received a large selection of
pinotage wines, each with a clever golf-
related prescription printed on a label for
every Eurocool manager.
Mackay himself then said a few words,
walking everyone through his career
journey. From accidental beginnings
through various highlights like becoming
general manager of JL Clark in 1988 and
later of Metek. It was an illustrious career
of many ups and downs, but Mackay
always stayed loyal to the industry.
He thanked a few specific people, with
a special word of thanks to the staff for

A NEW LEADER FOR EUROCOOL
The new managing director of Eurocool is
no stranger to the industry. Taylor started
at JL Clark in 1991 as external sales in
Johannesburg. He was then promoted
to Durban branch manager in 1994;
regional manager coastal region from
2000 to 2006; and then product and
marketing manager in Johannesburg
from 2006 to 2011. He joined Carel
Controls as managing director in 2011,
where he remained until June 2018.
So, why the move? “I have always
enjoyed being part of a success
story,” says Taylor. “I was privileged
to be part of the substantial growth
of Metraclark’s expansion from the
and was emotional about his retirement.
“David, you have always been
everyone’s rock and we will miss you
greatly,” she said. She also welcomed
Taylor on behalf of the staff.
Everyone then enjoyed some more
refreshments and time with Mackay.

Agencies, as well as the growth of
Carel South Africa in my time there.
It has taught me a great deal and as
such, I am excited to be a contributor
to Eurocool’s future growth.”
He sees great potential for himself
as well as the company within the
local industry. “Eurocool is the smallest
wholesaler in the Beijer Ref group,
and that in itself presents unique
opportunities to position ourselves
differently from the traditional
wholesalers in the market,” he explains.
“We are looking to offer a different
buying experience to our customers on
many levels.” CLA
