I t’s not always easy to come back in a new year, but I think everyone is quite ready to put 2018 behind them and start ‘fresh’. The year 2018 will definitely be a year to remember — whether you’re remembering it as a struggle or a record year. Judging from the many conversations I’ve had with industry players across the cold chain, last year really was a tough one for most. I know we seem to say this at the end of every year, but 2018 was even more intense. It wasn’t all bad, though. It’s important to remember the good parts and learn from the not-so-good ones. You definitely cannot go back and change anything now, but you can take the necessary precautions and plan better to be more prepared in the new year. You can give 2019 a fighting chance of being the elusive ‘good year’ that all businesses chase. For me, there were many highlights I’ll remember from 2018 — despite all the hard work and stress in-between. We hosted a record FRIGAIR and various other events during that time. The HCFC Phase-out Management Plan (HPMP) roadshow finally happened. I took over from John Ackermann as editor of Cold Link Africa. And of course, the greatest highlight of them all: Chillventa 2018 in Germany. It wasn’t my first time attending this massive refrigeration expo in Nuremberg, but this time, I enjoyed it so much more than previous times. It brought an incredible mix of catching up with familiar faces and meeting new ones, impressive new product launches, and events galore. What a show it was! With an overwhelming number of stands (more than 1 000) and visitor numbers hitting an all-time high, Chillventa 2018 was memorable in a good way. I saw more South Africans in attendance than ever before and as my step counter climbed to record highs, I was impressed time and time again by how quickly technology moves in our industry. (Read more about Chillventa on page 12.) But it wasn’t just overseas that things were moving quickly at the end of last year. Make sure you catch up on all the cold chain news you missed locally before tackling the new year. There were some interesting changes in management for companies such as Eurocool (page 4) and Carel (page 7), who appointed new managing directors. Testo donated a thermal imager to OTTC (page 5), Metraclark held a Christmas party for the kids of the Kliptown Nursery School in Soweto (page 31), and so much more. Some incredible projects also went up last year. My to-write list is quite long when it comes to all the projects that were completed in 2018. From pack houses, berry farms, milking parlours, and everything in-between, make sure you keep an eye out for the 2019 editions to read more about these projects. For now, have a look at the Sagamu Brewery installation in Nigeria (page 8) and the trans-critical CO 2 installation done at Woolworths Kyalami (page 38). Whatever your 2018 was like, may 2019 be memorable for all the right reasons. Times are tough, but like they say — desperation breeds innovation. So, let’s innovate. Welcome back officially. Let’s do this! CLA COLD LINK AFRICA • January/February 2019 Ilana Koegelenberg Editor | [email protected] www.coldlinkafrica.co.za 3
