New technology revolutionises pork abattoir in East London By John Ackermann

The owners of the East London Abattoir set their sights on having the most energy and operationally efficient plant possible for their new pork production .

GEA Africa , having done previous work at the abattoir , was chosen for the design and installation , as their knowledge of carcass chilling as well as their associated quality and code compliance , made them the obvious partner .

The East London Abattoir was built as a state-owned abattoir during the era when other abattoirs such as those at City Deep , Cato Ridge and Pyramid ( Pretoria ) around South Africa were built by the Abattoir Corporation . The East London Abattoir started out as a municipal abattoir supplying fresh meat daily to the butchers in the East London area .
The original ammonia refrigeration system at East London was installed in 1962 with some plant upgrades in 1982 . Over time , one by one , the state sold off all its abattoirs which became privately owned facilities .
In 2015 Glen and Bruce Page bought the East London Abattoir and continued with the slaughter and processing of cattle , sheep and pigs . The new owners originate from a proud Eastern Cape farming heritage .
