The Lipizzaner Stallions of the
Spanish Riding School
The world renowned white stallions of the
Spanish Riding School in Vienna have a
history dating back to 1578 when a stud was
founded in Lipica (in what is now Slovenia) by
the Archduke Charles of the Austrian Empire.
In 1581, 24 brood mares and 6 stallions were
brought in from Spain to form the foundation
of the stud - and thus giving the name “Spanish
Riding School”. In the centuries to follow, under
patronage of the Hapsburg Emperors, the
stud farm in Lipica was renowned throughout
Europe for the grace and beauty of the white
stallions, which performed movements that are
still today the basis of international dressage
events. It was the Emperor Charles VI of
Hapsburg who ordered the erection of a grand
salon in the Hofburg in Vienna, so the white
stallions had a place to perform before royalty
and invited guests.
In the early 19th century , when Napoleon we
conquering most of the region of what is now
Italy, Austria and Slovenia, the stallions and
mares were moved to Hungary in an effort
to protect the breed. As political turmoil and
wars encompassed Europe, the breed was
further split with mares and stallions being sent
to Austria, Italy, Germany, Denmark and the
Czech Republic. Following the end of World
War, the horses were brought back to Austria
and the Federal Lipizzaner stud in the village
of Piber in southern Austria, with only 11 going
back to the original founding stud in Lipica.
Today the beautiful white stallions of the Spanish
Riding School perform in Vienna, as well as
around the world. Travel Direct of Kingscliff has
for 8 years been operating tours that include
visits to the studs in Lipica, Piber, then allows you
to enjoy a gala performance in the Hofburg in
Vienna, seated in the front row of the VIP Box.
The 2013 tour will this year start in Budapest,
visiting Zagreb, the Croatian island of Hvar, and
the port town of Rovinj, before heading inland
again to Lipica, Piber and Vienna. For more
information on this tour, call Trevor at
