A VALENTINE
LOVE STORY
Ann and Derek Cranch met in 1948, were
married in 1953 and have been together
ever since. Married over 60 years, and still
as in love today as they were then, one can
only wonder to the secret of their Success.
Now residing in Banora Point, Ann and
Derek met when they were 15 and 17
respectively in London. After a couple of
initial hiccups and a fantastic proposal
from Derek to Ann which was “You are
luscious, do you want to get married” Their
journey began. Once they were married,
they emigrated to Australia. Ann left her
Mother to come to Australia with Derek
and his family. This being the ultimate show
of the love she felt, as unfortunately , Ann
never saw her mother Jessie again. They
soon built their home and settled, Firstly in
Melbourne and then up to the Gold Coast,
where it was warmer, and Derek could
cope with chronic Asthma. During this time
their love grew along with their family, Ann
and Derek eventually having 5 daughters.
The love of this couple radiated into their
own children. “Their love and guidance
have shaped us into the women we are
today. All of us
inheriting
Dads
amazing
sense
of humour and
quick wit” said
their
second
eldest daughter,
Heather. “Mum
was funny too but
Dad would never
let her finish the
joke because he
Derek & Ann Cranch reckons that he
tells it better,” said Heather.
The ability to laugh at each other and the
constant early morning communications
have kept this family bound together.
After Derek lost his job as a boat builder
in 1974, he acquired a hobby of painting
and established himself as a local identity
around Tweed Heads and the side of the
road at Currumbin, always with Ann by his
side. So not only have they lived together
they have worked together.
Ann believes the secret of their love is these
few things… Never take an argument to
bed, Never belittle your husband in front of
other people, Always communicate and
love each other no matter what. Love, not
words win arguments.
“When one is surrounded by love,
the feeling of excitement fades
away, and one tends to ignore the
true love that lies in between the
peace and dullness.” anon
