Sharing Advice

New Teachers Discuss Their Experiences

Recent graduates of the UK College of Education returned to campus last semester to provide advice to students preparing to begin their own teaching careers . The graduates , who were all in their first or second year of teaching , held a panel discussion for a group of current student teachers .

The teachers shared that college had prepared them to hit the ground running , but there are always little things for which a new teacher can never be fully prepared , noted Joni Meade , a clinical faculty member who coordinates elementary student teaching .
Following the visit , the panel members and current students shared feedback about the experience :
Teacher feedback :
“ I thought it was so beneficial for the current student teachers to hear from current teachers who had been in their shoes just about a year ago .”
— Hadiyah Bukhari , a 5th grade teacher at Glendover Elementary
“ I really enjoyed getting to share advice , tips , and ideas with the student teachers and comfort them in knowing that the UK College of Education has prepared them in the best ways possible . It was so exciting being on the other end of the education program and getting to use what I have learned in my first two years of teaching …”
— Kirsty Fields , a 2nd grade teacher at Picadome Elementary
