Dr . James P . Cousins , a 2010 alumnus of the Department of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation , and faculty member in the Department of History at Western Michigan University , has published “ Horace Holley : Transylvania University and the Making of Liberal Education in the Early American Republic ” with the University Press of Kentucky . In this biography , Cousins examines Holley ’ s contributions toward the transformation of Transylvania into a university recognized nationally for its scientifically progressive and liberal curriculum . Cousins analyzes this in the context of westward expansion and its influence on social progress , religious change and education during Holley ’ s tenure .

Alumnus Receives Lilly Family School of Philanthropy Award
Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation alumnus Dr . Richard Trollinger has been named the second annual recipient of the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy Distinguished Alumni Award . Trollinger , who is vice president for college relations at Centre College in Danville , is one of the nation ’ s top experts in educational fundraising .

Trollinger earned a master ’ s degree in philanthropic studies from the IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and his Ph . D . in educational policy studies from the UK College of Education . He also earned a bachelor ’ s degree at Emory and Henry College and a master ’ s degree in higher education administration from Vanderbilt .
Trollinger is the co-author of “ Philanthropy and American Higher Education ,” with UK ’ s Dr . John Thelin , which describes how philanthropic support of higher education is integral to the character of colleges and universities . He currently chairs the board of directors for the Danville-Boyle Economic Development Partnership in Kentucky . He has also served as a board member and chair of the Kentucky School for the Deaf Charitable Foundation .
Goldstein Publishes on Action Research in Indonesia
As part of the five-year Higher Education Leadership and Management program funded by US AID in Indonesia , two publications have been issued from the action research component led by Dr . Beth Goldstein , associate professor and department chair in Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation . The Goldstein publications , “ Navigating Change through Action Research : Cases from 25 Higher Education Institutions across Indonesia ” and “ Riset Aksi untuk Manajemen Perubahan di Perguruan Tinggi ” (“ Action Research for Change Management in Higher Education ”), are available in both English and Indonesian . The first focuses on the goals , processes and outcomes of the 25 action research projects undertaken through the initiative . The second is a trainer ’ s manual on how to teach the use of action research to introduce programmatic , policy and practice change in Indonesian higher education institutions . Goldstein has recently presented on this project at the American Anthropology Association ’ s annual meeting .
Waddington Presents on Charter Schools
Dr . Joseph Waddington , assistant professor in Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation , presented before the Kentucky Board of Education during a special study session on charter schools in November . Waddington provided an overview of charter school research findings pertaining to student outcomes , with a focus on the validity of research and research methods . In his own research , Waddington is involved with colleagues at UK and the University of Notre Dame studying school choice policies in Indiana , including charter schools and private school vouchers .
